The Porsche 911 GT2 RS: The Beast From The East

Via: Bring A Trailer

Porsche’s GT2 RS is a very impressive and powerful car of the Porsche line up. The first generation got launched in 2010. Later on, the second generation came out between 2017-2019 which we can easily consider to be the most iconic.

The 911 GT2 RS is what you get when you combine a lightweight sports car with a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine which creates 700 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. This beast goes 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 211 mph.

Porsche’s GT2 RS also has the RR layout (rear engine and rear-wheel drive) without driveshaft or front differentials, the rear wheels get programmed to turn opposite to the front wheels by 2.8 degree for faster turn-in and maneuverability at low speed. It’s lightweight, and the optional Weissach package was available in this model too. It cost around $31,000. The optional package included magnesium wheels which reduces weight by around 25 lbs, and other carbon fiber components like the roof, anti-roll bars, and end-links on both axles.

This overpowered machine has a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Every car enthusiast likes manual transmissions, but they might not be able to handle this surreal level of power. In PDK sport mode every shift takes milliseconds, and it does so with authority. Ratios between shifts are very close keeping the dual-turbos on boost.

This car gets provided with front and rear spoilers, which help in achieving better aerodynamics. Front scoops give fresh air to the front brakes. The striking air intakes on the aerodynamic front end and behind the doors are an indication of the huge demand for cooling in the powertrain and an increase in the aerodynamic downforce. Many aspects of the aerodynamic system get taken from the GT3 RS for the mighty GT2 RS. Aerodynamics are the main focus on the GT2 RS with spoilers, vents, and intakes which keeps this beast glued to track.

This mighty beast definitely costs more. It did cost $293,200 18 months ago but is now unavailable to purchase new from Porsche USA at the time of writing.

The GT2 RS

In 2010, Porsche introduced the first GT2 RS to the world. Whereas the GT3 RS was produced alongside the original GT3 for several years, the GT2 wholly replaced the GT2 when it came out. Both lighter and stronger than the original GT2, the GT2 RS engine generates a power output of 456 kW along with 700 N⋅m of torque.

In 2017 the 991 generation of the GT2 RS was unveiled. With a 3.8 L twin-turbo flat-six engine, the 991 GT2 RS has a maximum power output of 515 kW, or 691 hp, along with 750 N ⋅ m of torque. This version of the GT2 RS holds the distinction of being the most powerful production 911 variant Porsche has ever built. Because it does not have all-wheel drive, the GT2 RS is also about 300 lbs. lighter than the Turbo S it was originally based on.

In order to minimize weight, the GT2 RS incorporates a titanium exhaust system, carbon-ceramic brakes, rear-axle steering, and a stability and traction control program.

In 2017, Porsche test driver Lars Kern used a 911 GT2 RS to set a 6 minute, 47.3 second record time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with an average speed of 114.4 MPH.

A GT2 RS holds the record for the fastest production lap eve recorded, coming in at 3 minutes, 24.079 seconds around a 7.77 km track. This record was set in 2018 by Warren Luff, an Australian race and stunt driver.

The 2019 Porsche GT2 RS is, as far as we can determine, the fastest street-legal car available right now. It goes from 0 to 60 MPH in 2.7 seconds.

Differences between GT2 RS and GT3 RS

We spoke to several customer service representatives from Porsche. They told us that the difference between the GT2 RS and GT3 RS can be summarized in one word: speed.

The GT3 RS is renowned for its mix of speed, handling, performance, and feel. The GT2 RS, on the other hand, pushes the speed envelope as far as Porsche cars can possibly go.

Another thing to note is each car’s limited availability. “These two models are limited productions,” one agent noted. “The GT3 is only available every 4 years, whereas the GT2 is available every 7-8 years.” Additionally, “the GT2 RS will only be available once during that model’s lifespan.”

This article will primarily discuss the latest versions of the GT2 RS and GT3 RS, released in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Weissach Package

Before concluding, we should mention the Weissach Package that is optional for both GT2 RS and GT3 Rs. The WP, originally devised for the Porsche 918 Spyder, grants extra engine power and reduces the weight of a car by about 40 lbs.

The package comprises of anti-roll bars on front and rear axles, coupling rods and roof both made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic, and optional forged magnesium wheels. It includes a bolt-in roll cage made of titanium, which, as we all know, possesses the best strength-to-weight ratio of any metal. This makes it approximately 26.5 lbs. lighter than the steel roll cage. If that weren’t enough, the ultra-light gearshift paddles and the steering wheel trim are also made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic with a carbon-weave finish. They even made the carpet trim lighter.

It would be safe to assume that the GT2 RS with the Weissach Package is hands-down the lightest and fastest Porsche ever conceived. Source: bringatrailer.com

Conclusions

So, in conclusion, the GT2 RS is about pure speed, whereas the GT3 RS is about balancing speed with exquisite performance.

If you’re need for speed is absolutely unquenchable, the GT2 RS could be the car for you. But if you want smooth handling and control while still easily achieving white-knuckle speeds, give the GT3 RS a try.

2024 Porsche 911 GT2 RS: Speculation and Overview

2024 Porsche 911 GT2 RS – The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is a sports car with a powerful engine, yet very economical. The 911 GT2 RS also provides a premium interior with refined features and many customization possibilities. Even though this is a sports car, Porsche makes this car very comfortable and practical for everyday use. Apart from that, its impressive and elegant appearance also gives the 911 GT2 RS its distinctive character.

We found that this car was last released in 2019, and did not find a generation after it. Therefore, we hope that in 2024 Porsche will return to present the 2024 Porsche 911 GT2 RS with a new style and much better performance.

2024 Porsche 911 GT2 Rendering

Exterior Design

As a sports car, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS features an impressive exterior with an elegant and modern design. In addition, this car also shows the perfect combination of classic and modern styles. The front of the car looks classic and the design is similar to some Porsche sedans. Meanwhile, the rear of the car shows that this is a luxurious and elegant sports car, with a cool appearance.

Interior Design

Although the cabin looks cramped, it’s the right size for a sports car with 2 passenger seats. Because, the most important thing is that Porsche shows a modern design, and can provide security and comfort even when driving at high speeds. The materials used are of high quality, and the features use sophisticated technology. Just expect this to be the best sports car interior.

Engine Specs and Performance

The 2019 Porsche 911 GT2 RS is equipped with a high engine and performance, and that’s what this car should have. The engine is 3.8 L with a flat 6 cylinder, expect a horsepower output of more than 695 hp @ 7,000 rpm, and torque of more than 560 lb-ft @ 2,500 rpm. It’s possible to use a hybrid engine, but we don’t expect that.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Although this is a sports car that may only be used for style, collection, and at certain times, this car is expected to have infotainment and connectivity features. Because some people may use it for everyday driving or use it to relax on the weekends. So, a 10-inch infotainment screen, USB connection, AM/FM stereo, and others, at least should be there.

Features

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is expected to have qualified features. Because it should be a sports car with an expensive price and equipped with qualified features. In addition, features that can provide security and convenience are important. Because some people may have difficulty driving a sports car. This can prevent accidents or other unwanted things.

2024 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Pricing and Release Date

Reporting to edmunds.com, the price of the Used 2019 Porsche 911 GT2 RS is priced at $293,200. If the 2024 Porsche 911 GT2 RS is built, then it’s likely that the price will be higher than the previous generation. We speculate that the price of the car is in the $295,000 – $305,000 range. Regarding the release date, we speculate that the 2024 911 GT2 RS will be released in the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2024.

The Porsche GT RS Range At The Turn Of 2023

Via: Porsche

Now at the end of 2022, the Porsche GT2 RS is currently unavailable for purchase on Porsche’s North American website thought the GT3 RS is still advertised with an MSRP of more than $223,000.

Since this article originally went out, Porsche announced the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport 25, a special car designed and developed by Porsche and Manthey for track days and circuit racing.

This craziness for the track gets inspired by Manthey’s own 911 GT3 R and is not for boulevard cruising — it is a hardcore, track-only car that features aero and features even more specialized above and beyond Porsche’s ‘standard’ cars; the cost is well over $500,000 and examples got limited to around only 30 units.

For now, the next-generation models under the ‘GT RS’ nameplate will likely be the last of their kind since the range will likely feature hybrid technology on board until these vehicles eventually turn to electric powertrains when governments implement dates for the end of the sale of gasoline vehicles such the EU’s 2035 ban on new fossil-fuelled cars.

Which Porsche 911 Killer Is Better, The GT3 RS Or GT2 RS?

Via: Porsche

Both the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and GT3 RS got made to provide an experience of a sports car that can get driven on the tracks and on the streets. Why would Porsche ever release two performance-based cars which look similar: let’s see what separates these two beasts.

The GT3 RS has a 4-liter flat-six ‘boxer’ engine which is naturally aspirated and the GT2 RS has a 3.8 flat-six twin-turbo engine. Porsche’s GT2 RS has larger turbochargers, a distinct crankcase, unique pistons, large air ducts, intercoolers, and a unique WIS (water injection system).

Power-wise, the GT3 RS gets more than 500 hp and the GT2 RS delivers 700 hp. The weight is another aspect where they differ. They also get different calibrations of shock dampening, steering, rear-axle steering, and stability control systems. Both the 911s get different front and rear fascias due to different cooling system requirements. A GT2 RS comes with carbon-ceramic brakes, whereas the GT3 RS comes with gray cast iron rotors until later when both got offered with the carbon brakes.

Both of these hardcore Porsche 911 flagships are extremely powerful, though they may inspire drivers differently. If you are a track lover, you should go for GT2 RS, but if you are looking for a normal drive-through on the city roads you should go for the GT3 RS. Do keep in mind both the machines can get driven on track and road. It depends on whether we want raw & natural power or turbo power; but Porsche has our back with both.

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS price and release date

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS is on sale now. It costs from £178,500. That’s over £40,000 more than the GT3 costs and it’s almost £10,000 more than a 911 Turbo S. The optional Weissach Pack adds almost £26,000 (if you spec it with the fancy carbon cage).

Unlike other special-edition Porsche models (such as the Sport Classic) the 911 GT3 RS production run isn’t limited to a set number of cars. You might not need to know the special Porsche handshake to get yourself a build slot, then…

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS engine and performance

The new GT3 RS uses a similar 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine as the GT3.

Watch this Porsche 911 Turbo S review

New camshafts help it feel snappier at high revs (the redline doesn’t curtail your fun until you hit 9,000rpm) and boost power from 510hp in the GT3 to 525hp in this RS model.

The seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox is similar to the optional automatic ‘box you can get in the GT3 (there’s no manual option in the new RS) but Porsche has fitted a shorter final-drive ratio to boost acceleration in all seven gears.

Porsche claims it’ll hit 60-mph from rest in 3.2 seconds. That’s the same as the outgoing 991.2 GT3 RS and 0.2 seconds quicker than the new GT3.

Watch the video below to see just how quick that car REALLY is…

However, you can take that figure with an unhealthily large pinch of salt – Porsche usually undersells the performance of these cars and it’s likely the 911 GT3 RS will crack the all-important 0-60mph sprint in close to 2.7 seconds.

Aggressive queues are found throughout every part of the body, always taking aerodynamics and cooling into consideration. Whether it be the large rear spoiler, front fender vents, or antagonistic front bumper, the GT RS looks outstanding, but not awkward.

In my opinion, the GT2 RS is as beautiful as it is functional – a perfect blend of form and professionalism, it performs its duties in the utmost style. A car that goes this fast, needs to look the part.

Here are some YouTube video reviews from some of my favorite car reviewers and auto personalities. All of them provide feedback from an “everyday guy” perspective – but aren’t afraid to thrash the car around a racetrack when given the opportunity – providing commentary that is both technical and easy to absorb.

First up is Matt Prior from Autocar, doing his commentating-while-driving-sketch in a Weissach package equipped GT2 RS. He goes into detail about how “absolutely bang-on” the car is while referring to the RS series’ evolution from a “widow maker” to a refined road carving machine.

Next, is CAR Magazine UK’s Chris Chilton providing his point of view on what he describes as one of “the best driver’s cars in the world”.

What two-time World Rally champion Walter Rohrl has to say, carries a lot of weight. Watch as CarBuzz and Mr. Rohrl show us what the GT2 RS can do on the track at Algarve International Circuit in Portugal.

Last but not least, is Porsche’s official onboard footage of that record-setting lap by Lars Kern at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. It even provides some telemetry. Very neat. Very fast. Very g-force.

The Original GT3

The GT3 was first introduced in 1999 as a homologation model of the ever-popular Porsche 911, specifically the Porsche 996 model range. Like the GT2, the GT3 was named after the class from the FIA. Also like the GT2, the GT3 was focused on racing and eliminated any items or features that added unnecessary weight to the car. Gone were the rear seats, sound dampening, rear loudspeakers, sunroof, and air conditioning. In came a new flat-six engine design based on units used in the 911 GT1 race car. The engine became known as the Mezger after its chief designer, the engineer Hans Mezger.

Although the Mezger is very similar to the completely water-cooled 962 engines, except that the GT3 engine uses two-cylinder heads each covering a battery of three cylinders.

Interestingly, because the air-cooled crankcase has an engine-to-transmission mounting flange configuration, the 996 GT3 used six-speed manual gearbox that was also inherited from the air-cooled 911. Because this gearbox had interchangeable gear ratios and was more durable overall, it was better suited for racing than the standard 996 type of gearbox.

The GT3 also featured enlarged brakes, a lowered and retuned suspension system, lighter wheels, and a special front bumper with rear spoiler to bolster downforce and increase overall grip. The sum total of all these features made the GT3 one of the best track cars Porsche had produced up until that point.

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS interior

The new GT3 RS comes with a similar interior to the latest GT3 – with a few tasty upgrades, of course. These include carbon-fibre sports seats as standard and a new steering wheel with added buttons for controlling the car’s new adaptive suspension.

If you fancy yourself as a car-setup savant, you can alter the compression and rebound damping of each axle individually and tweak the settings of the standard rear limited-slip differential.

You can also get a steel roll cage as part of the no-cost Clubsport Pack, or ditch this in favour of a lighter carbon-fibre cage in the Weissach pack. This also adds unpainted carbon fibre body panels and optional magnesium alloy wheels.
