Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Pilot’s V-6 has a sporty sound and plenty of power, and we like the unobtrusive behavior of the nine-speed automatic transmission. The Honda is not the most ponderous three-row crossover to drive, but its considerable size can make it feel heavy when cornering. The 20-inch wheels that come on the upper trims hurt ride quality a bit, but they enhance the Pilot’s otherwise dorky appearance. And the vehicle rides relatively smoothly when loaded with people and stuff. The Pilot’s lack of body control makes it seem disconnected from the road at times. And its light steering makes it easy to maneuver at parking-lot speeds, but it also contributes to the detached feel on the highway.

Style & Design: 7/10

Like many recent Honda redesigns, the Pilot’s exterior has been made more trucklike in an effort to stave off persistent accusations of a minivan-like appearance. While the upright grille, squinty headlights and longer hood help toughen it up some, the Pilot isn’t scaring anyone and still reads as more pudgy crossover than sinister SUV. Standard LED headlights sharpen the Pilot’s after-dark appearance, and higher trims get plentiful gloss-black accents.

The interior’s redesign is more utilitarian than aesthetic, with big improvements to the climate controls, storage and seating reconfigurability. However, some nicer materials are available as well, and the screen placement and gauges are modernized. The practical wipe-clean leatherette and ample stitching and padding in the TrailSport’s interior is lovely, and even if this cabin doesn’t quite match the sizzle of the updated Telluride or the stylishness of the Mazda CX-9, its practicality exceeds most competitors.

4. Уплотнители. Производители предусмотрели сразу двойные уплотнители на дверцах машины. Это помогает сохранить брюки чистыми в любую погоду. Тонкость заслуживает похвалы.

В целом, люди остались довольны такой моделью. Мало того, «Хонда Пилот» 2021 тест-драйв видео показало множество неожиданных до этого положительных характеристик. Машина достаточно удобна в использовании. Её умеренные размеры — это ещё один огромный плюс. Салон большой также приветствуется. Мотор тут прыткий. А вот незаметная работа «автомата» вообще выше всяких похвал. Может, вы такой автомобиль и не будете использовать для ежедневных поездок по городу до работы, но поехать на нем на дачу или на пикничок вполне себе приемлемо.

Итог: прелестный «бегемотик» прошёл проверку тест-драйва успешно, и это можно легко посмотреть на представленных видеороликах. Автомобиль оказался вместительным и достаточно удобным для поездок. Может, он и не предназначен для городской суеты, но вот поездку за город точно сделает комфортной. Есть претензии на экономию по части отделки внутри, но насколько они обоснованы, можно узнать только спустя время. В целом, машина стоит своих денег.

Вывод: «Хонда Пилот» хоть и проста во внутренней отделке, но имеет положительные нюансы в системе управления бортовой системой. На управление это никак не влияет. Прожорливость автомобиля имеется, но может заправка 92 бензином смогла бы это компенсировать? Ходовая часть авто практически лишена изъяна. И в целом машина заслуживает «лайков». Смотрите тест-драйв и оценивайте качества автомобиля не только по внешним данным. Простая отделка салона ещё не говорит о простоте машины. И по превосходству некоторых характеристик «Хонда Пилот» вовсе не так проста. «Бегемотик» уже радует автолюбителей во многих странах. А может быть, она уже сейчас радует и вас?

Every Pilot comes standard with forward-collision warnings, auto-emergency braking, road-departure mitigation, lane-keeping, traffic sign recognition and adaptive cruise with low-speed follow. In August 2023, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the redesigned Pilot the highest Top Safety Pick+ title, crediting structural changes for improved passenger-side small overlap front crash testing.

The older Pilot had earned the same “Poor” rating as the Palisade and CX-9 for new IIHS testing that places a crash-test dummy in the second row behind the driver. Among three-row SUVs, the Ford Explorer and the Subaru Ascent are the only vehicles that have passed the new test so far.

While the new V6’s power output almost exactly matches that of the outgoing VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) version at 285 hp, the Pilot’s acceleration feels slightly anemic, in part because it’s now powering a much larger and heavier vehicle. 

While its power is adequate for the type of driving a three-row crossover is typically asked to do, certain maneuvers like short-onramp merging can leave the Pilot feeling flat-footed. Sport Mode perks it up some, but its aggressive dialing up of the throttle response can make the Pilot feel a bit spastic at low speeds. 

While its steering feel is comfortable and precise, the Pilot is far from a handling machine. It wallows a little but only when driven hard, and its compliant suspension soaks up road roughness competently without feeling spongy. Still, those looking to check the “fun to drive” box in a three-row crossover will want to look to more dialed-in competitors like the Mazda CX– and Kia Telluride, as well as the Ford Explorer ST. 

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Pilot offers something that many competitors lack: a dedicated off-road trim. With its improved ground clearance, torque-vectoring AWD, terrain modes, trail-monitoring camera system and unique off-road hardware, the Pilot TrailSport offers greater capability than the typical unibody soft-roader. While it may not quite attain the off-road chops of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, it holds its own against credible off-road variants like the Explorer Timberline and Telluride X-Pro.

What’s new for 2022?

The bottom rungs on the Pilot trim level ladder have been stripped for 2022 and replaced with a new Sport trim that starts at $38,055, including the $1,225 destination charge. That’s $4,280 more than the old LX base trim, but it also comes with more equipment. There’s also another new trim level, the 2022 Pilot TrailSport. It comes standard with all-wheel drive, an extra 0.6 inches of ground clearance, fender flares and 18-inch alloy wheels with tires «sporting a more rugged-design sidewall.» Oddly, Honda did not release photos of either the Sport or TrailSport at the time of their announcement, which is why they aren’t seen in this review.
