GX 550 Luxury, Luxury+
- Status: top trim
- Best features: expect more premium features as standard, and possible suspension upgrade from Premium
Same as in 2023, the Luxury is the range-topping model for 2024. The 2023 GX 460 Luxury started at $69,930 US.
Both Luxury trims get the largest wheel size at 22-inches, wrapped in 265/50R22 tires. And for both Premium and Luxury, rear tread is increased by 3.26 inches (4.06 inches for the Overtrail grades) compared to the outgoing GX.
But towing specs are different for Luxury and Luxury+, rated at 6,990 lbs. and 6,780 lbs., respectively.
At time of writing, Lexus hasn’t broken down the exact feature list for Luxury and Luxury+. We know with the outgoing 2023 GX 460 Luxury, extra features above Premium included an adaptive variable suspension, a semi-aniline leather interior trim, and a power-reclining and folding third row.
For 2024, there are some available upgrades we suspect will be standard on Luxury+, maybe Luxury as well. This includes LED fog and cornering lamps, a head-up display (HUD), heated second-row seats, third-row with power configurations compared to manual, 21-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound (over base 10-speaker system), Digital Key, Cool Box, Traffic Jam Assist, Cold Area Package, and Tonneau cover.

GX 550 Overtrail Interior
Lower instrument panel, improved button placements, and new black-olive interior colour
2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail
Inside all GX 550s, expect a completely new cabin. The redesigned, horizontal instrument panel now sits lower for improved visibility and a better view of the optional HUD. Lexus retained the hard switches and dials for the important stuff, and moved the off-road control closer to the gear shifter.
Exclusive stuff
2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail
2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail
Overtrail’s interior trims come in a GX-first colour combination of Black NuLuxe trimmed interior with Olive Ultrasuede accents. For a cleaner look: Chateau NuLuxe trimmed interior with Olive Ultrasuede accents and black ornamentation.
Another small difference: all models get six illuminated charging ports; Overtrail finds four.
GX 550 Premium, Premium+
- Status: entry-level trim
- Best feature: 8,000 lbs. towing capacity
This is the entry level model, and like most luxury full-size SUVs and vehicles, the GX 550 Premium comes loaded with standards. It rides on standard 20-inch alloy wheels, which isn’t bad. The higher grades, less Overtrail, step up to the 22-inch size.
2024 GX 550 Premium. Photo: Lexus
2024 GX 550 Premium interior. Photo: Lexus
Another difference here is the Premium trim’s approach angle specs. Preliminary specs show approach: 26-degree; breakover: 23-degree; and departure angle: 23-degree. Compare that to GX Luxury’s breakover angle of 21-degree – a two degree difference. We’re not sure this matters to most buyers, but hey, there you go.
Premium is also taller than its Luxury counterpart, sitting 75.59-inches compared to 75.39-inches, respectively.
Towing capacity the big difference
Perhaps the biggest differentiator between the grades is towing capacity. And that’s what gives the entry-level GX 550 its edge. Like Overtrail, Premium will tow up to 8,000 pounds. Luxury/Luxury+ is rated at 6,990/6,780 pounds. So, that’s a huge plus, in our books. GX 550 towing specs per trim:
- 2024 GX 550 Premium, Premium+: 8,000 pounds
- 2024 GX 550 Overtrail, Overtrail+: 8,000 pounds
- 2024 GX 550 Luxury: 6,990 pounds
- 2024 GX 550 Luxury+: 6,780 pounds

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 will come with a host of safety features and cutting-edge technology. Some of the safety features include a blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. The latest in technology will be integrated into the infotainment system. The infotainment system will come with a 10.3-inch touch screen display, 14 speakers, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Safety Ratings
The 2020 Lexus GX 550 is one of the safest vehicles on the market, with a host of safety features that help protect drivers and passengers alike. The GX 550 comes standard with a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
TopElectricSUV says
GX customers in the U.S. love its V8 engine, which, although not very powerful or torquey, is silky smooth. With its so-called tank-like strength and million-mile reliability, it makes for a highly desirable purchase for people who often drive in extreme weather or go overlanding.
Built in Tahara (Aichi Prefecture), Japan, it’s also highly regarded for its quality paint and build. If you enjoy off-roading with a twist of luxury, the GX provides an excellent entry point with a price of under USD 60,000, making it nearly 30,000 cheaper than the LX. The redesigned model should be a little more expensive, though, especially in the Hybrid variant.
The all-new Lexus GX is probably the company’s final new body-on-frame SUV packing a combustion engine under the hood. The redesigned GX makes sense for the small segment of Lexus clients who want their posh SUVs to go anywhere but don’t need something as big or extreme as the LX, allowing it to tackle even more terrain than its predecessor while being less thirsty, thanks to its hybrid-electric powertrain.
There is no more V8 power
The 2024 GX will be propelled by a new 3.4-liter (aka. “3.5-liter”) twin-turbo V6 engine that is largely shared with the Lexus LX 600 and other platform mates. This engine produces 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system. Lexus estimates the 2024 GX 550 efficiency at 17 MPG combined, so it’s not much better than the outgoing V8. A gas/electric hybrid version of the new GX is coming at a later time.
The new twin-turbo V6 powertrain will allow the new GX to tow up to 8,000 lbs.
The GX 550 wheelbase grows to 112.2 inches (the wheelbase grows by about 2.5 inches). The new design allows for better approach angle and ground clearance. Here are some specs. It has 26-degree of approach, 24 degrees of break-over, and up to 22 degrees of departure.
These are not the ultimate off-roader specs, but it’s better than it was. Also, the new GX should have excellent any-terrain traction capability because of the following off-road technology features. The Overtrail models will include Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control (DAC), 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor, and Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS). An electronic locking rear differential is exclusive to the Overtrail models.
The all-new GX 550 has a chiseled new look, it’s a bit larger than before, and it has more off-road capability from the factory. It offers more power, slightly better efficiency, and more trailer towing capability. Yes, it looks like a home run.
When will it arrive?
Lexus will assemble the new GX 550 at the Tahara plant in Japan, just like the past models. It will go on sale in the United States in early 2024. Pricing and other details will be available closer to its launch. For reference, the current 2023 Lexus GX starts at just under $60,000.
Conclusion
The new Lexus GX550 will come in 2024. It will be more modern but still have a simple design. The new GX will be a fancy SUV with a new platform, eco-friendly engines, and a cool interior. It will compete with other luxury SUVs.
The Lexus GX has always been a solid SUV, and the new model promises to be even better. With its boxy design, ladder frame construction, and the choice of two hybrid powertrains, the new Lexus GX will be a formidable opponent in the luxury SUV market.
The new model’s slimmer dashboard, higher-quality materials, and infotainment system should bring a contemporary feel to the interior. The 2024 Lexus gx550 is a rugged and reliable SUV that will continue to appeal to those who need a luxury vehicle with off-road capabilities.
The 2024 Lexus GX550 is not just an update but a significant evolution. This new model brings together Lexus’ luxury, innovation, and versatility heritage, promising a driving experience like no other.
Lexus’ commitment to balancing style and functionality, comfort and durability, is beautifully manifested in this redesigned SUV. The anticipation for the release of the 2024 Lexus GX550 is well-deserved, and it’s certain to redefine the standard of luxury SUVs when it arrives in showrooms in early 2024.
EXTERIOR DESIGN: AUTHENTIC OFF-ROADER PROPORTIONS
The new GX displays the proportions of an authentic off-roader. The development team focused on producing a design that expresses the vehicle’s performance capabilities. This can be seen in the pulled-back front pillars, flared wings and low belt line. The overall effect they sought was the look of a car that has been cut from a solid block of metal.
Overall, the GX is longer and wider than the current model and has a longer wheelbase, but overall height has been reduced.
The thick, squared-off shape of the bonnet projects toughness, but the bonnet’s low-set centre section ensures the driver has a good view of front corners, so they can manoeuvre the vehicle with confidence. With a shorter front overhang, the GX has a greater approach angle for tackling steeper slopes.
The grille, uniquely styled for the GX, has a criss-cross mesh, and connects to a body-coloured under-guard. As a strong frontal feature, the grille’s form generates lines that create a distinctive and powerful “spindle body” shape. Both grille and headlights are positioned as high as possible to avoid striking obstacles when driving on rough roads. Similarly, the radiator cooling ducts are set high to ensure good performance.
The rear of the car displays the signature Lexus L-shaped light bar with high-set lamps, making the GX easier to spot when driving off-road in convoy.
Lexus GX sales
Lexus GX sales in the U.S. went up 14% in 2021, growing from 28,519 units in 2020 to 32,509 units. It was the third highest-selling Lexus SUV in the country in 2021, while the RX and NX took the first and second spots. It contributed approximately 11% to Lexus’ total U.S. sales in 2021 – 304,476 units.
In 2022, as the auto industry hit turbulence with new supply chain problems, the Lexus GX recorded a 7.9% year-over-year decline in sales, with 29,945 units delivered (2021: 32,509 units). In Q1 2023, 6,370 units of the GX were delivered, 12.2% lower than in Q1 2022. It seems supply chain issues have continued to create a production shortage for the model in the first quarter of the year, which would mean customers are waiting longer than usual for deliveries.
What’s New 2024 Lexus GX 550?
The new 2024 Lexus GX 550 is a mid-size SUV that seats up to seven passengers. It has a starting price of $55,000 and comes standard with a V8 engine, all-wheel drive, and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The GX 550 is also available with an optional third row of seating.
Is Lexus GX 550 2024 worth the wait?

Power
Pushing all new GX models is a 3.4L V6 twin-turbo engine. Yet, the Overtrail grade tows more than the range-topping GX 550 Luxury and GX 550 Luxury+: rated at 8,000 lbs. versus 6,990 lbs. and 6,780 lbs., respectively.

The aim is to create a luxurious and comfortable space for everyday driving and off-road adventures.

Design
In terms of design, the Lexus GX, like its big brother Lexus LX, has always stood out from the rest of the Lexus SUVs. Of course, it has become more upscale and sophisticated with the latest redesign. It still has a brawny character with a conventional shape and lots of muscle all around. If fact, the third-gen Lexus GX looks squarer than the outgoing model.
The 2024 Lexus GX features an imposing face. Image Source: Lexus
Front
The front of the Lexus GX no longer looks weird and an afterthought. It’s quite the opposite, projecting confidence and aggression. The new triple-beam headlamps feature a horizontal daytime running light (DRL) configuration, with a vertical grille positioned just beneath it, reminiscent of Toyota’s latest American pickup trucks, namely the Tundra and Tacoma. Their shorter height and straighter positioning go well with the shape of the body, which has become boxier. LED fog and cornering lamps are present in the lower bumper.
Lexus designers have pulled back the A-pillar to improve visibility, and they’ve also straightened it up. As a result, the windshield is more upright. The hood, which is straighter, too, has a low-set center section for the same reason. It ensures the driver gets a good view of the corners and is able to make complex off-road maneuvers with confidence.
Even the nose section is more upright. Gone is the oversized spindle grille. The new grille, positioned at a higher level like the headlamps for protection from obstacles when driving on rough roads, has a criss-cross mesh. Radiator cooling ducts placed below this grille give the all-new GX a raw and classic look. Further lower, there’s a skid plate to protect the underbody. The overhang is shorter, which gives a greater angle and makes it possible to climb up steeper slopes.

Side
On the sides, the 2024 Lexus GX features a high and straight shoulder line, broad shoulders, vertical mirrors, squarish windows and quarter glass, and protruding wheel arches. Lexus designers have used the textbook SUV formula to its fullest, and that’s most visible at this angle. A lower beltline gives the driver a better view of the surroundings and helps them have a better sense of the vehicle’s position on the terrain.
Rear
Moving to the rear, an attention-grabbing LED blade stretches across the width of the SUV, which is a distinctive hallmark of Lexus design. It ends in the signature L-shape at both ends. The brand logo has been tastefully inscribed in a minimalist manner, positioned directly above the center of the light bar, further accentuating the vehicle’s rear look. The liftgate is positioned in an almost fully upright position, with a slight forward tilt in the upper half. The back glass is not only rectangular but also wide and tall, ensuring that the driver has an unobstructed view of the rear when looking through the inside mirror.
An elongated LED bar spans the width of the 2024 Lexus GX at the rear. This is a signature cue of Lexus design. Image Source: Lexus
2024 Lexus GX 550 Performance and Power: Conquer Any Terrain
A Potent V8 Engine for Exceptional Performance
Under the hood, the Lexus GX 550 boasts a powerful 5.7-liter V8 engine that delivers impressive performance both on and off the road. With 383 horsepower and 403 lb-ft of torque, this engine provides exhilarating acceleration and effortless power, allowing you to conquer steep inclines and navigate through challenging terrain with ease. Whether you’re towing a trailer or simply enjoying a spirited drive, the GX 550’s V8 engine ensures a thrilling experience every time you hit the road.
2024 Lexus GX 550 Advanced Off-Road Capabilities
The 2024 Lexus GX 550 is equipped with advanced off-road technologies that enable it to conquer a variety of challenging terrains. Its full-time four-wheel-drive system with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) ensures optimal grip and traction, even on slippery surfaces. Additionally, the GX 550 features a TORSEN limited-slip center differential, which allows for a 40:60 torque split between the front and rear wheels, providing excellent stability and control in off-road situations.

Stock Lockers And Two Meaty Turbos
Power in the new Lexus GX comes from the V35A-FTS 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 out of the Toyota Tundra. This force-fed six is good for 349 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque, a handy boost over the outgoing model. If that’s not quite right for you, Lexus pinky promises that a hybrid variant is coming down the line.
Every Lexus GX 550 comes with a ten-speed automatic gearbox and full-time four-wheel-drive with a locking Torsen center differential, but the Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims get an electronically-locking rear differential for added traction in slippery conditions. Those Overtrail trims also get 33-inch all-terrain tires, which are certifiably bitchin’. Look, I don’t make the rules, but luxury SUVs on all-terrain tires are just cooler than those that aren’t. The Overtrail trims also get promising off-road assist systems including various terrain modes, hill descent control, terrain monitoring, and Lexus’ clever KDSS suspension system that can effectively disengage the anti-roll bars under severe wheel travel to give you extra articulation when you need it most. Speaking of rear suspension, Lexus doesn’t mention whether the GX uses a live axle or independent rear suspension, but zooming in on a high-res press shot appears to show a coil-sprung solid rear axle. It all adds up to some intriguing capability.
New V6 engine delivers more GX horsepower & torque than outgoing V8
2024 Lexus GX 550 twin turbo V6 engine
2024 Lexus GX 550 gear shifter with off road controls
Gone is the outgoing GX 460’s 4.6L V8 making 301-hp and 329 lb.-ft. of torque. The new GX 550 gets a highly capable and efficient twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 engine paired with a 10-speed Direct Shift Automatic Transmission. Full-time AWD comes standard, and new enhancements on the electronic transfer case means switching into 4hi is now faster than before.
Sure, the new engine drops a couple cylinders but it delivers significantly more power than the previous generation V8; now rated at 349 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. Below, a quick spec comparison:
GX 460 vs GX 550 performance specs:
2023 GX 460 | 2024 GX 550 | |
Engine | 4.6L V8 | 3.4L V6 |
Horsepower | 301-hp | 349-hp |
Torque | 329 lb-ft | 479 lb.-ft. |
Towing Capacity (max.) | 6,500 lbs. | 8,000 lbs. |
Considering smaller SUVs these days are making well over 300 horsepower, like the new mid-size Toyota Grand Highlander with 362 horsepower, the GX’s 301 horses was in need of a boost. Lexus will offer a hybrid-powered GX down the road, and our guess is, it will be even more powerful than this new V6.
2024 Lexus GX 550 Premium
Lexus GX towing capacity improves across the board
Towing capacity also increases to 8,000 pounds compared to 6,500 pounds before. However, this only applies to the Premium and Overtrail trims (Signature, Premium, and Overtrail in Canada).
The top GX trims — Luxury and Luxury+ (Luxury and Executive in Canada) — see towing capacities below 7,000 pounds: 6,990 pounds and 6,780 pounds, respectively. Below, a ratings for each trim:
