Demonstration Day

Upon being delivered to Texas a week before the scheduled promotional demonstration, the Super Snake was outfitted with a set of ten-spoke Shelby aluminum wheels, mounted with 7.75-15 Thunderbolt whitewall tires. These tires were overinflated with nitrogen, in an attempt to prevent overheating at high speeds.

Prior to actual testing, Shelby put the Super Snake through its paces, even “hot lapping” it at a reported speed of 170 MPH. Shelby also took the editors of both Time and Life magazines out for separate demonstrative laps, the likes of which we are reasonably sure that neither ever forgot.

When the time came, Shelby passed his helmet to Fred Goodell, inviting him to complete the 500-mile test that was to follow.

Commenting on the matter, Goodell said, “ came back and he handed me his helmet and he says, ‘I’ve got to go to Washington, so you go ahead and drive the test.’ And so I got back in the car and I drove the car in the 500-mile test. We drove at 142 MPH average for 500 miles.”

The test was deemed to have been immensely successful, as both the Super Snake and its Goodyear Thunderbolt tires had performed flawlessly. Upon examination, it was determined that Goodyear’s new economy tire had survived its torture test, retaining 97% of its total tread.

Building The Super Snake

With a GT500 selected for modification, work got underway to transform the production vehicle into the highest performing Mustang of the era. The heart of the Super Snake was to be a lightweight, heavily modified version of the aforementioned GT40-class 427 cubic-inch V8, including the prior engine’s signature “Bundle of Snakes” exhaust.

Don McCain later referred to this engine as, “the mother of all 427s at the time … aluminum heads, aluminum water pump, forged crank, Le Mans rods, just basically everything inside the engine was built to run sustained 6,000 rpm to race at Le Mans.”

All considered, the GT500 derived, Super Snake was reported to have produced 650 HP, though many speculate this number to be highly exaggerated. In reality, it is estimated that the Super Snake was actually capable of producing approximately 520 HP. Nonetheless, this is a figure that is still quite impressive, even by today’s standards.

Along with pulling the GT500’s standard 428 cubic-inch “Police Interceptor” V8, and trading it for this specialty 427 cubic-inch V8, a number of additional modifications were made. All such upgrades were intended to promote the Super Snake’s on-track ability and performance prowess.

The most valued of these subsequent modifications included the addition of an external oil cooler, braided lines, and a remote oil filter, which served to enhance the Super Snake’s reliability. Goodell also implemented the use of heavy-duty front disc brakes, traction bars, an enhanced cooling system, and a Detroit Locker rear end. Additionally, 2.73 rear gears were also installed to maximize the Super Snake’s top speed.

For added distinction, the GT500 Super Snake featured a unique variant of the Shelby line’s production Le Mans striping. A centrally located white stripe ran the vehicle’s length and was flanked to each side by similar blue stripes, of a narrower dimension.

New for 2013, Shelby American began offering the GT500 Super Snake in an optional “Wide-Body” format. In this form, the Super Snake featured a 13” rear tire/wheel kit, which provided the car with an outwardly aggressive stance.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake was also host to numerous additional cosmetic features, including a new hood and front/rear fascias. Also featured were signature “Super Snake” placards, found in various locations on the vehicle’s body, including the area directly to the rear of each front wheel well.

Consumers could select from a number of available base colors when purchasing the Super Snake package, including Race Red and Deep Impact Blue. One could also choose between the addition of gloss black or gloss white racing stripes, though silver and blue striping were also available on a limited basis when combined with select base colors.

Inside, the 2013 GT500 Super Snake featured all of the standard Shelby interior features, including Katzkin-upholstered seats, custom embroidery work, A-pillar gauges, specialty trim, and “Shelby” logo accents. Each Super Snake also featured sequentially numbered placards from Shelby American, testifying to the vehicle’s authenticity.

Insane 750 Horsepower Pony Car

The 2010 Shelby GT500 Super Snake post title package has arrived and this years Super Snake will have a host of handling, styling and power upgrades ranging from 630 horsepower to well over 725 horsepower.

Exclusivity will be assured as a limited number of Super Snakes will be built at the Shelby Autos facility in Las Vegas or one of the Mod Shops, beginning in August 2009.

“We take great pride in engineering fast, fun cars that people love to drive,” said Carroll Shelby. “Over the past 12 months, my team of hot rodders was hard at work on a Super Snake package for the next generation GT500. Every lesson we learned kicking the competition around on the track over the past two years has been poured into this new car to keep Shelby owners out front.”

Born on the drag strip and road course at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Ford Racing and Shelby Automobiles dialed in an even more aggressive suspension and engine package for the 2010 car.

“Since we introduced the Super Snake package for the GT500 in 2007, this Shelby has become the pinnacle of current generation muscle cars,” added Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Automobiles. “While the stock GT500 is a fine car, serious enthusiasts know that they can come to us to make their Shelby even better. For those who crave a harder edged Shelby, this is your car.”

5 Built As A Demonstrator For Goodyear Thunderbolt Tires

Shelby American was Goodyear’s Tires West Coast distributor. The tire company had just come up with a new line of economy «Thunderbolt» tires — these were meant for boring family cars. Goodyear contracted Shelby to do a high-speed and much-publicized test for the tires. Carrol wanted to use a car that could beat every GT500 in existence, that’s how the Shelby Super Snake came to be.

The test was conducted at Goodyear’s proving grounds — a five-mile-long oval — in San Angelo, Texas. With Carrol Shelby on the wheel, the nitrogen-inflated tires (for rigidity and to prevent overheating) received some on-track punishment with 150-mph thrill rides. He then handed the car and his helmet over to Fred Godell who did 500 miles at an average of 142 mph. In the end, the test was a success as the 7.75-15 Thunderbolts had survived the torture and retained 97 percent of their original tread.

2 Shelby 1967 Super Snake Continuation Models

The 1967 Super Snake didn’t exist in production form (technically) until 2018 when Shelby American re-introduced it with 10 more units dubbed “Continuation Models”. They are all based on a 1967 Ford Mustang Chassis that was donated to inspire engineers in the project. Most of the parts got built by Legendary GT Continuation Cars with their 427 cu in V8 engines beings supplied by Carroll Shelby Engine Co.

The 1967 Super Snake Continuation Models engine churns out over 550 horsepower and is mated to a four-speed manual transmission although some of their engine specs got tweaked to improve driveability. Each of the 10 has both a Shelby serial number as well as Carroll Shelby’s and Don McCain’s signatures created for the original 1967 project.

Beneath the Shelby Super Snake’s hood resided a supercharged, 5.0-liter Coyote V8, which came in a consumer’s choice of two individual output ratings. In its standard form, the Super Snake came equipped with a Ford Performance supercharger and was capable of producing 710 horsepower. Alternatively, those with an insatiable need for speed could opt for a larger Whipple supercharger, which brought the car’s total output up to 800-plus horsepower.

In either of its two forms, the Super Snake’s V8 powerplant came equipped with an upgraded cooling system, which included a bespoke radiator, and a high-flow heat exchanger. This engine was also fitted with a custom Ford Performance exhaust kit.

The 2019 Super Snake could be purchased with either an automatic or manual transmission, both of which were of a 6-speed make. Super Snakes featuring an automatic transmission, also came standard with a high-performance transmission cooler, while all manual Super Snakes featured single-piece driveshafts.

In a bid to enhance the Super Snake’s handling capabilities, Shelby American also made a number of suspension-related tweaks, which included the addition of a Ford Performance suspension kit. Consumers could also opt instead, for the installation of a Penske/Shelby track suspension kit. Stopping duties were handled by a set of Wilwood brakes, which included 6-piston front calipers, 4-piston rear calipers, and drilled/slotted rotors.

Looking The Part

The 2019 Super Snake was the recipient of numerous cosmetic upgrades as well. Some of the most notable of these upgrades included the addition of a custom hood, grille, front/rear fascias, spoiler, and rockers. Also of note, were several new high-contrast paint schemes made available for 2019, known as the “Bold” series. These color patterns included Shadow Black/ Green Stripes, Green Lime/ Black Stripes, and Twister Orange/ Black Stripes.

Rounding out the Super Snake’s outward aesthetics, were a set of 20” forged aluminum wheels. These wheels were available in “Black” or “Bright”, upon customer request, no matter the car’s exterior color.

The Super Snakes interior also underwent a certain level of revision, most notably in regard to the addition of signature-series floor mats, door sill plates, and a Shelby placard of authenticity. Additionally, the Super Snake featured Katzkin seats, with Shelby custom stitchwork. The color of this stitchwork was dependent upon a consumer’s choice of exterior color.

Not For The Faint Of Heart

The 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake packs enough ponies beneath its hood, to give even the most unwavering of performance-minded individuals a thrill. In its base form, the Super Snake carries a rated output of 662 horsepower.

While some might note that this number is in line with the standard GT500’s performance specifications, those at Shelby felt that this level of output would be sufficient to satisfy the needs of many consumers.

On the other hand, Shelby also delivered in earnest, for those with an outright need for speed. The 2013 Shelby GT500’s 5.8 liter V8, offered in a supercharged variant, produced 850 horsepower and propelled the Super Snake to top speeds in excess of 200 MPH.

This performance came as the complement of a 3.6 liter Kenne Bell supercharger, which was accompanied by a high-performance radiator, air-to-water intercooler, and a sizable snorkel-style air intake.

The GT500 Super Snake sent power rearward through a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. Power was then provided to the rear wheels, via a set of 3.31 ratio differential gears, though 3.72 rear gears were also available.

Additional mechanical upgrades included the addition of a Shelby/Wilwood brake package. This package outfitted the Super Snake with six-piston front calipers, and four-piston rear calipers, as well as a set of cross-drilled/vented rotors.

The GT500 Super Snake also featured an upgraded suspension package, which included front camber plates, as well as rear-mounted remote-reservoir gas dampers. These subtle additions allowed the Super Snake to maintain its composure when cornering, even at high rates of speed.

In comparison, a 1967 Shelby GT500, with a 7.0-liter V8 engine could only manage 355 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.

What Could Have Been

Upon the Goodyear test’s completion, Don McCain, who was then employed at Mel Burns Ford in California, convinced Carrol Shelby to tap the Super Snake for a special 50 unit production run. As a result, the Super Snake was shipped to Mel Burns Ford, where McCain spent the following months attempting to drum up any available interest.

However, this was simply not meant to be. Priced at more than double that of the baseline GT500, the Super Snake fell flat. Even McCain himself was forced to concede, stating that the Super Snake was, “just too expensive.”

Ultimately, Shelby’s 1967 Super Snake was shipped to Dallas, where it was purchased by Braniff International Airways pilots, James Hadden and James Gorman. The pair intended to drag race the high-performance Shelby, and thus replaced its original 2.73 gearset with a 4.10 unit.

Over the next several decades, the Super Snake changed hands on numerous occasions, with at least two owners still having yet to be identified to this day. We do, however, know that the Super Snake has since been returned to its original form, being highly reflective of its state during the day of its infamous Goodyear test.

Richard Ellis, a collector of rare Mustangs, purchased the Super Snake early in the new millennium. Upon purchase, Ellis conducted what he refers to as a “light restoration.” The specialty Shelby was outfitted with period-correct wires and hoses, NOS Shelby 10-spoke wheels, and even a set of Goodyear Thunderbolt tires.

In 2019, the one and only original 1967 Super Snake sold at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction for 2.2-million dollars, making it one of the most expensive Mustangs ever sold. Ironically enough, the Super Snake has twice held this distinction, having sold in 2013 for 1.3-million dollars.

4 Fitted With Thin & «Mismatched» Tires

One Mustang collector who got to own the 1967 Shelby Super Snake remarked that the car was “way too fast for the technology of the tires it was on” — and it’s true. The white-walled Go0dyear Thunderbolt tires are the skinniest tires ever mounted to a Ford Mustang G.T. 500. The main reason they weren’t even made in a size appropriate for the Super Snake is that they would mostly end up on station wagons and family sedans.

When Richard Ellis wanted to restore the Super Snake car with the original pieces used for the test (after 35 years), he couldn’t find the original Goodyear ThunderBolt tires anywhere. Luckily, a picker in an East Coast tire warehouse came to his rescue when he chanced upon 10 original Thunderbolts.

10 новых модернизированных фастбэков Super Snake будут построены по заказу у доноров Мустангов 1967 года в Пенсильвании, с заводскими VIN-номерами и оригинальными названиями. Автомобили будут разобраны и переоборудованы из нового листового металла, с четырехцилиндровым карбюратором Holley и двигателем V-8 мощностью 550 лошадиных сил и 427-цилиндровым двигателем. Четырехступенчатая механическая коробка передач Top Loader синхронизируется с блокируемым дифференциалом, но возможны пятиступенчатая или даже автоматическая трансмиссия. На каждой готовой модели будет табличка с серийным номером Шелби и подписями Кэрролла Шелби и Дона Маккейна.

Super Snake переживает возрождение: в прошлом году к 50-летнему юбилею был представлен 750-сильный Mustang GT. Грузовики также участвуют в соревнованиях, с F-150, который может устоять против гоночных автомобилей.

Каждая из 10 машин будет построена на заказ, а цена будет начинаться с 250 000 долларов.
