A Racecar for the Road
The new M4 CSL uses the same twin-turbo S58 inline-six as the Competition but gets a 40 horsepower bump over the M4 Competition and goes on a 240-pound diet. The result is a zero-to-60 time of 3.6 seconds. It’ll also run to 124 mph (200 kph) in a supercar-like 11.5 seconds and wind all the way to 190 mph.
The M4 CSL effectively runs the same engine as the racing-only M4 GT3 but without that car’s dry-sump oil system. The key to the power hike is partly due to the new exhaust but mostly due to M moving the maximum turbo boost pressure from 1.7 bar (or 1.3 bar in the manual) to 2.1 bar.
Perhaps not surprisingly, there will be no manual. M4 CSLs will drive through an eight-speed automatic transmission, which can cope comfortably with the 479 pound-feet of torque (unchanged from the M4 Competition) and shift faster than Hans-Joachim Stuck.
There have been massive suspension tweaks, including lowering the ride height via new springs, to cope with the extra grip from the all-new Michelin Cup2R tires, which run to 275/35 ZR19 rubber upfront and 285/30 ZR20s at the rear.
Weight Right There
A raft of carbon-fiber pieces—including the hood, the roof and the shaped bootlid—and deleted components help pull 240 pounds out of the M4 Competition to weigh in at 3,580 pounds.
“We were searching for 100 grams in the interior at the end, though. I know 100kg sounds like a convenient marketing number, but nothing more was possible,” Robert Pilsi, BMW M’s project manager for the M3 and M4, told Forbes Wheels. He admitted that a bit more—maybe 20kg—could be found if the M4 CSL didn’t have to meet the more restrictive crash regulations in the US, but it does.
Some of the weight reduction measures, like the carbon fiber pieces, were obvious, but some were not. A single-zone climate control system replaces the standard dual-zone, the rear seat and seatbelts are deleted, 33 pounds of sound deadening were removed, forged alloy wheels save 46 pounds, a titanium exhaust saves 7 or so pounds and is louder to boot, to name but a few modifications.
With contrast red and silver stitching, the extreme, full carbon-fiber front seats are fixed and fitted to just one driver and adjust only fore and aft. Well, they can be adjusted for rake angle, but it takes a workshop, using a three-stage screw linkage.
They have detachable head restraints to allow a six-point harness to be fitted for track work. There is a “normal” carbon-fiber seat that does without the two-color stitching if buyers opt for it.
Removing the head-up display and the backup camera, found the last pieces of weight for global models, but backup cameras are required in the U.S. BMW admits that some people care less about weight than others, so it is willing—for a price—to put back in some of the stuff it has taken out.

В частности, спецы из BMW существенно увеличили жесткость кузова кабриолета на кручение и снизили центр тяжести автомобиля.
Вкупе с практически идеальной развесовкой (50:50), а также расширенными передней и задней колеей (на 28 и 18 мм, соответственно) это, как заявляют в BMW, благотворно повлияло на управляемость кабриолета.
Новый 4 Series Convertible получил также ходовую часть, перенастроенную с прицелом на бóльшую точность и прозрачность реакций автомобиля на действия водителя. Опционально новый кабриолет можно оснастить более жесткой подвеской серии М Sport, электронно-управляемыми амортизаторами, а также задним дифференциалом с электронной блокировкой.
Мягкую складную крышу нового кабриолета «четвертой» серии в BMW разрабатывали «с нуля».
В итоге она стала на 40% легче, чем у предыдущего 4 Series Cabrio; кроме того улучшились акустические и теплоизолирующие свойства тента. «В базе» крыша выполнена из черной ткани, в качестве опции доступен верх в цвете «Антрацит» с серебристым эффектом.
Интерьер нового кабриолета, как заявляют в BMW, проектировался в расчете как на тех, кто любит неспешные прогулки в открытом авто, так и на водителей, предпочитающих активный стиль езды. Первые оценят систему «Воздушный воротник», подающую теплый воздух в район шеи водителя и переднего пассажира, а также аудиосистему Harman/Cardon Surround Sound, вторые – спортивные кожаные кресла с широким набором электрорегулировок. Ремни безопасности подаются передним седокам автоматически, при помощи электропривода.
Линейку двигателей для нового кабриолета 4 серии составят на первых порах три бензиновых турбомотора и столько же турбодизелей. Базовой станет бензиновая версия 420i Convertible с 4-цилиндровым 2,0-литровым двигателем, развивающим мощность 184 л.с. и максимальный крутящий момент 300 Нм. Ступенью выше в линейке расположится модификация 430i Convertible (2.0 л, 258 л.с., 400 Нм), венчать бензиновую гамму станет версия M440i xDrive Convertible с рядной 3,0-литровой «шестеркой» (374 л.с., 500 Нм) и полным приводом.
Дизельную линейку составят версии 420d Convertible (4 цилиндра, 2.0 л, 190 л.с., 400 Нм), 430d Convertible (6 цил., 3.0 л, 286 л.с., 650 Нм) и M440d xDrive Convertible (6 цил., 3.0 л, 340 л.с., 700 Нм). Две последние модификации поступят в продажу во втором полугодии 2021 года: «430-я» – в июле, «440-я» – в ноябре.
Все двигатели удовлетворяют экологическим стандартам Euro 6d; бензиновая шестицилиндровая модификация нового кабриолета, а также все дизельные версии оснащены 48-вольтовым стартер-генератором, обеспечивающим дополнительные 8 кВт (11 л.с.) мощности. Our Take on the 2023 BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible
It’s easy to dismiss the M4 Convertible. As enthusiasts, we know it’s heavier and less capable than the fixed-roof coupe, so we steer clear. The reality is the M4 Competition xDrive Convertible feels just as quick and agile as the M4 coupe, and most buyers won’t even notice the downsides of opting for the drop-top… aside from the price.
Everything you expect from a new M car is present in the M4 Convertible. The twin-turbo S58, tuned here to 503 hp, sounds wonderful and delivers gobs of power and torque from idle to redline. It’s paired well to ZF’s widely used eight-speed automatic, which can crack off shifts nearly as well as the best dual-clutches on the market. In a straight line, this thing is supercar quick.
The front end remains the M4’s bright point, pointy and eager to devour any corner you throw it at. The steering isn’t entirely feel-some but it’s so quick that you won’t really care. It’s behind the wheel where experienced drivers will feel the occasional cowl shake coming through the column into their hands over bumps, a consequence of the missing roof. At least the folding soft top is a high-quality piece, able to isolate occupants from the world and make the M4 Convertible feel like a coupe when it’s not tucked away.

The 2023 BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible comes standard with the company’s fantastic S58 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six engine, tuned to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. Power gets to all four wheels via an eight-speed torque-converter automatic and a trick all-wheel-drive system that can be switched to rear-wheel drive for big, smoky drifts.

The run from zero to 60 mph takes 3.6 seconds, and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, or 174 mph if you option the M Driver’s package. That package also gets you a one-day high-performance driving class at a BMW performance center.

While it has been developed with the track in mind, there is no option for a roll cage, which makes it fully road legal. “It’s more in the direction of motorsport, like the M4 GT4, and less from the flash of the Competition model,” Pilsi said.
Its track-day credentials include modifications to the driver-assistance systems and a 10-step adjuster to change the drift angle—and that can even be done mid-corner for the brave or the foolish.
The first five stages of the M Traction Control (aka drift mode) are for executing controlled drifts, while the final five are copies of modes developed for touring car racing, to find maximum speed depending on tire temperature and wear and surface conditions.
This massive strut brace is held on in eleven different anchor locations under the hood, and is just part of the reinforcing that goes on to ensure the CSL’s high dynamics limits. BMW
The M4 CSL is 8mm lower at both ends, and that’s mostly achieved via new springs that also dictated new mapping for the active dampers at each corner. One of the keys to the added (predicted) track pace is an enormous die-cast engine bay strut, to add rigidity to the front end’s ability to bite. The hollow strut bolts down in 11 places—so it’s a serious piece of hardware—and it even weighs 3 pounds less than the M4 Competition’s engine-bay strut.
The aggressive front splitter is also in carbon fibre, with two exposed grooves, and the carbon bonnet also hosts the new, 50th anniversary BMW M heritage logo, which can be ordered for any BMW M car built this year. The optional laser lighting—and those throwback yellow running lights—adds little weight, but they look great. Without this option, the DRLs are white.
The standard equipment includes the M Drive Professional system that includes a drift analyzer and a lap timer, among other doo-dads. It comes with the Live Cockpit Professional with a 12.3-inch digital multimedia screen and a 10.25-inch instrument cluster. It integrates navigation, wireless charging, smartphone integration and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The M4 CSL will start at a heady $140,895, which is enough to buy yourself a trio of base-model 430i Coupes. BMW
Trims
The M4 coupe can be chosen in base or Competition trim with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive along with an optional six-speed manual for the base car. The M4 Convertible strips the buyer of those choices. It’s available only in AWD Competition form with the eight-speed automatic.

Our tester came with a handful of packages to improve the experience. The Driving Assistance Pro package and Parking Assistance package made life easier with active driving and safety systems, while the Executive package added a heated steering wheel and a remote engine start feature.

Technology
Like any new BMW, the M4 Convertible is packed full of fun and useful tech to make the driving experience more pleasant. A giant curved pane of glass encapsulates the digital gauge cluster screen and infotainment touchscreen, which comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Inside you’ll also find things like a Harmon Kardon stereo, a WiFi hotspot, and multi-zone climate control.
The tech doesn’t stop in the cabin. The M4 Convertible comes standard with adaptive M suspension and an M Sport differential out back, allowing the chassis and drivetrain to best adjust to your driving preferences and the road conditions.

Interior
The M4 Convertible’s interior is based on the normal 4-Series, and that’s a good thing. There’s a fair amount of space for the driver to adjust their seating position as they’d like, and a pleasant dashboard setup that’s nice to look at and easy to use. We’re not huge fans of the design style used in the digital gauge cluster, but it delivers clear, concise information as needed. While it looks cool, we’d also have no issue ditching the carbon fiber interior trim ($950) for something more pedestrian.

This is the first M4 I’ve driven without the $4500 optional carbon-backed bucket seats, and I have mixed feelings about their absence here. The base seats aren’t bad, but there’s far more lateral support in the buckets, and I can sit much lower in the car. For most people, the base seats are just fine, and are likely better over longer trips. But for my money, I’d get the buckets.

The most discussed, and controversial, aspect of both the 4 Series and the M4 is its face. The gigantic grille still sharply divides opinion, and if the internet has anything to say, fans aren’t necessarily in love with the more extreme versions, and the CSL inserts yet more fussiness. Its raw speed and raucous exhaust, however, might be a perfect match for these in-your-face visuals.
That said, the M4 CSL will tick the visual boxes with yellow daytime running lights (that are legal, officer, and only come with the laser-light option), a hugely scooped bonnet and a rear ducktail spoiler, rather than a sticky-outy rear wing.
There will only be three colors—this Frozen Brooklyn Grey metallic paint, plus Black Sapphire and Alpine White. Sadly the vivid hues of the M4 competition won’t be added. The CSL’s brake calipers are all painted red instead of gold, but that’s the only change to the braking system.
The optional sport seats in the M4 Competition are aggressively bolstered to keep you in place at the track, but the M4 CSL takes racing seats to another level. If you want to adjust the recline, you’ll need to break out your tools. BMW
