Highlights of the first Genesis electric car
The Genesis Electrified G80 for the U.S. comes in one variant, and that may not change with the MY2024 update. Image Source: Genesis
- The Genesis Electrified G80 is the brand’s first electric car. It embodies the ‘Athletic Elegance’ and ‘Beauty of White Space’ design concepts in the exterior and interior.
- The EPA-est. range is 282 miles for the 2023 model but could be slightly better for the 2024 model. At a 350 kW rapid charging station, the battery charges 10% to 80% in 22 minutes.
- The Electrified G80 comes exclusively in all-wheel-drive. The two motors deliver 272 kW (365 hp) and 516 lb.-ft. The sedan accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds in Sports mode.
- The G80 electric has a Disconnector Actuator System (DAS) that automatically connects or disconnects the motor and driveshaft based on the driving conditions, including vehicle speed and the driving mode, seamlessly switching between 2WD and AWD to reduce power loss and improve efficiency.
- The Electrified G80 comes with a 400V/800V multi rapid charging system that does not entail an additional converter. The motor and inverter can boost voltage from 400V to 800V for stable charging.
- The Electrified G80 also offers V2L (Vehicle to Load) that lets customers use the energy stored in its traction battery pack to run appliances outside the vehicle.
- The Genesis G80 EV comes with ANC-R (Active Noise Control-Road). The noise cancellation system significantly reduces noise by measuring and analyzing road noises with four sensors and six microphones placed inside the vehicle and simultaneously generating sounds at the opposite phase.
- The Preview Electronic Control Suspension (Pre-view ECS) is controlled by information supplied through the front camera and navigation system, which helps to create an optimum driving experience.
- The brand’s signature Crest Grille is converted into an ‘aerodynamic crest’ sporting an inverted G-Matrix design. The charging flap is placed in the grille’s upper right corner. Dual chrome lines have been applied as a design highlight.
- The Genesis G80 EV comes with a solar roof (not available in the U.S.) for increased efficiency.
- It uses aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastics to reduce body weight while enhancing rigidity.
- Sustainable materials, wood, PET, nylon, and natural dyes are used in areas like the seat fabric, console, and rear armrests.
- Exclusive color options for the Genesis Electrified G80 are Matira Blue (exterior) and the Dark Lagoon Green/Glacier White two-tone (interior)
Cargo Space & Storage: 6/15
The 2023 Electrified G80 lost about 17% of its trunk capacity in its conversion from internal combustion—the rear-mounted electric motor protrudes into the space—so it has the least cargo capacity in its competitive set at just 10.8 cubic-feet, and that’s with a small tire inflation kit replacing the spare tire. Average trunk capacity for that set is 13.2 cubic-feet and for all midsize sedans it’s 15 cubic-feet.
The Genesis does have lots of cubbies, door pockets and cup and bottle holders, but its rear seats don’t fold down to enlarge overall cargo space, and it has no under-hood storage, or frunk, unlike its rivals. The Polestar 2 sports a 1.2-cubic-foot frunk and the Model 3 boasts 2.4 cubes of frunkage.
You Can’t Really Buy One, Though
The Electrified G80 is also a pretty strong deal, too. The $80,920 price (not counting the $525 for the Hallsan Green paint) does seem like a hard pill to swallow, but the car only comes in one, well-equipped trim. You get everything that I mentioned above. By comparison, a similarly equipped Genesis G80 is about $8,000 cheaper at $72,845, which is not a very big delta. Cars like the Mustang Mach-E or Tesla Model S might be faster and cheaper, but they’re not as nice. The Electrified G80’s direct competitor would be the forthcoming Mercedes EQE, but that car looks like a cough drop.
Unfortunately, it looks like you won’t have a choice but to buy one of those lozenge-shaped Mercedes EVs because the Genesis Electrified G80 is more exclusive than a Kanye West midnight shoe drop. It has “extremely limited availability,” and is only available at select dealerships in California, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Washington, Nevada, and Utah. There are no such limitations with other models of similar size, range, and price. Genesis did inform me that it intends to roll out the Electrified G80 (along with the electric GV60) to more states, but didn’t give a timeline.
That’s kind of the crux of the Genesis Electrified G80. The era of a chaotic new-car market, paired Genesis’ own limited production of the Electrified, essentially makes it a non-entry in the minds of most EV buyers. It’s only available at select Genesis dealers, in select states; I drove it around Columbus, but it won’t be available in Ohio until Genesis says when.
That’s a shame, because the Genesis Electrified G80 is a very good EV, probably the best iteration of the entire Genesis G80 lineup. The seats are very comfortable, and inside and out, it exudes a sort of timeless luxuriant quality that many of its competitors have yet to match. But, most importantly, it proves to us that a car doesn’t have to rely on half-assed gimmicks to be a good luxury electric car.
It’s too bad that most people probably won’t get the chance to buy one.
Features
The 2024 Genesis Electrified G80, like the outgoing model, may come in a single fully-loaded trim. While there could be a few equipment changes, we’re confident that full LED lighting, 19-inch wheels, noise-reducing acoustic laminated glass, and heated and auto-dimming mirrors will continue to be standard.
The interior of the Electrified G80 looks very much like that of its thermal-engined counterpart. The significant difference is that the insides use more recycled materials. Another difference is the digital gauges specific to the electric version. Image: Genesis
Interior highlights would include a 14.5-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system, a 16-way power driver seat with 4-way power lumbar support, and power side bolster and cushion extension, a 12-way power front passenger seat with 4-way power lumbar support, regenerative braking control paddle shifters, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
The Genesis Electrified G80 has ten airbags, including a front center side airbag, to reduce the injuries from a collision between the driver and front passenger. Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, and Highway Driving Assist are some of the other main standard safety features. We expect the 2024 model year update to carry over these standard safety features. The G80 EV has 17% more body rigidity than the regular Genesis G80.

The Electrified G80 has an 87.2 kWh battery pack that allows a range of up to 282 miles in the outgoing model. Charging from 10 to 100% SoC using a Level 2 charger takes 7 hours, 22 minutes. With a 350 kW rapid charger, charging from 10 to 80% takes just 22 minutes, though.
136 kW (182 hp)/258 lb-ft motors, one at the front and one at the rear, enable all-wheel drive. In total, there’s 272 kW (365 hp) and 516 lb.-ft. of torque available in the electric sedan. A 0-62 mph sprint takes just 4.9 seconds in sports mode. The car is equipped with a Disconnector Actuator System (DAS), which means minimized power loss and the flexibility to switch between 2WD and AWD drivetrain layouts.

Safety & Driver Assistance Tech: 13/15
The nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the Electrified G80 a Top Safety Pick+ in December. It earned the highest designation with top marks after crash-testing.
But the car hasn’t been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA) yet. The 2022 gasoline-powered G80 scored NHTSA’s five-star rating, but the internal combustion engine model’s scores can’t be transferred to the EV’s because even the removal of a hefty engine and transmission up front and placement of the rigid, reinforced battery pack beneath the floor could change how the Electrified performs.
Standard advanced safety and driver assistance technology on the G80 EV includes navigation-based adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, highway driving assist with lane following and turn signal activated lane changing assist, blind spot collision avoidance assist with blind spot view monitor, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist identification, reverse parking collision avoidance, a driver attention monitor, automated high beam control, safe exit assist and guide lamps that project onto the road to alert other vehicles and pedestrians when the G80 EV is reversing.
The Electrified G80’s interior leaves no doubt that this is a luxury car. Seats are covered in soft, pleated Nappa leather. The dash and steering wheel also are leather covered and the wood trim is matte finished to avoid the glare of highly polished surfaces. Genesis
Final thoughts
In approximately one year, the new 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 will begin its debut in the United States. It will first appear in California and some Eastern States, where EV-friendly environments will enhance its value. The model will pave the way for a new generation of electrified vehicles as Genesis follows through on its commitment to achieving total electrification by 2030. It’s a preview of the future for drivers as we face the consequences of the damage we’ve caused to our environment and do what we can to improve the planet’s health. The EV industry is moving toward a new way of life and travel, and we may one day see more charging stations than gas stations. It’s an exciting new age that we’re entering. We await the arrival of the new Genesis Electrified G80 with high expectations.

Performance: 13/15
The Electrified G80 is available only with an electronic all-wheel drive, dual-motor powertrain rated at 365 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, delivered through a single-speed automatic transmission.
While it is a heavy car—at 5,308 pounds it outweighs the Polestar 2 by 600 pounds and the Tesla Model 3 by almost half a ton—the G80 EV doesn’t feel bloated. Its low center of gravity keeps it firmly planted. It lacks the rear-steering that helps make the G80 Sport so nimble, but it’s fairly agile on 19-inch alloys and all-season tires, exhibiting little body roll.
There are several driving modes: Eco for maximum efficiency, Comfort for everyday driving and Sport for enhanced steering feel and go-pedal response and a slight stiffening of the electronically adjustable suspension.
Four levels of regenerative braking include an i-Pedal mode for one-pedal driving. It can bring the car to a complete stop without hitting the brakes and functions like a manual downshift when cornering and turning sharply on curvy roads.
The G80 EV’s torquey twin electric motors are based toward rear drive and deliver a 4.4-second zero-to-60 mph sprint. That’s a bit slower than the Polestar 2’s 4.1 and well behind the Model 3’s 3.1 seconds.
The Genesis Electrified G80 Pampers You With Luxury
via Genesis
Hyundai created Genesis as a standalone brand keeping the term ‘luxury’ at the core. Since the Electrified G80 is a car for a promising tomorrow, Genesis has ensured that the car doesn’t feel lacking in luxury and premium appeal. The Genesis Electrified G80 comes loaded to the brim with an electrically-operated smart trunk, front seats with 4-way power lumbar, steering wheel, and rear door sunshades.
The cabin of the Genesis Electrified G80 feels of a higher order with Nappa leather seats, matte wood trim, leatherette-wrapped upper instrument panel, and microfiber suede headliner and pillars. The front seats come with power cushion extension, power bolster, and ergo motion while featuring heating and ventilation functions. The list of premium features in the Genesis Electrified G80 also has a heated steering wheel, three-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, front passenger seat walk-in device, and active noise control.
Furthermore, the features like electronically-controlled suspension with road preview and variable gear ratio steering make the overall drive and handling experience comfortable. When it comes to offering an opulent feel inside-out, the Genesis Electrified G80 comes up as a suitable alternative to more expensive cars like Mercedes-Benz EQS and Audi e-Tron GT. The Genesis brand might not have as rich heritage as the Germans, but it is worth considering for the better price-to-package ratio.
Infotainment: 14/15
Most everything on and in the Electrified G80 is controlled via the 14.5-inch touchscreen, which itself is controlled either by a recessed rotary knob on the center console—a controller that’s fair clunky—or by touch, which requires the driver’s attention to shift from road to screen. Some functions also have control buttons on the steering wheel, and the system works well with voice commands.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is wireless phone charging. There’s a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. Each seating row gets two USB ports including a data/charge port up front, and there’s a neat power take-off system that allows the G80 EV’s battery to be used to power tools, appliances and audio-video gear.
The 21-speaker, surround-sound Lexicon audio system provides concert-hall quality sound.
The G80 EV also has corporate parent Hyundai Motor Group’s Remote Smart Parking Assist feature, which lets you step out, press a button on the key fob and watch while the car fits itself into tight parking spaces—parallel, perpendicular and angled.
Electrified G80 lost about 17% of its trunk capacity in its conversion from internal combustion, so it’s down to only 10.8 cubic-feet. John O’Dell
Range, charging, and safety
Official range and efficiency ratings haven’t been published yet, but Genesis estimates a respectable 282 miles of range. A standard heat pump and battery heater should help maintain maximum range even in cold weather. We also saw average energy use of between 3.7 kilowatt and 3.9 kW per mile during a week of driving — greater efficiency than we expected.
One of the most impressive aspects of the Electrified G80 is its 800-volt electrical architecture, which enables DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, and can charge the battery pack from 10% to 80% capacity in 22 minutes, according to Genesis. That’s some of the quickest charging currently available, although actually finding a 350-kW fast-charging station can still be challenging. Genesis is also including three years of free 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America locations.
Connect to a 240-volt Level 2 AC charging station — the kind normally installed as home chargers — and the Electrified G80 can charge at up to 10.9 kW, taking the battery pack to 10% to 100% in seven hours and 22 minutes, Genesis claims. The Electrified G80 also has vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability that can discharge power at 3.6 kW to run devices or appliances.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) haven’t published crash-test ratings for the Electrified G80, although both organizations did give the gasoline G80 high marks. While that’s encouraging, those ratings may not translate to the Electrified version as the addition of the battery pack and subtraction of the engine may change the way it performs in a crash.
The Electrified G80 does get the same warranty coverage as other Genesis models, including a five year, 60,000-mile new-vehicle warranty and a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Genesis also provides a separate 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty for the battery pack and other EV components.
